Diophantos
Diophantos
a military commander under Mithridates VI Eupator, the king of Pontus. In 110-109 B.C. he was sent twice with forces to the Crimea and successfully repulsed an attempt by the Scythians to seize Chersonese. During Diophantos’ stay in Panticapaeum with a diplomatic assignment, there was an uprising of the Scythians. Diophantos managed to escape to Chersonese, however. In the spring of 107 B.C., Diophantos made his third march to the Crimea from Pontus to suppress an uprising in the Cimmerian Bosporus. He succeeded in capturing the eastern Crimea and routing the rebels. The government of the Cimmerian Bosporus was under the control of Mithridates VI until 63 B.C.
