Del Carril, Hugo

Del Carril, Hugo

(pseudonym of Piero Bruno Hugo Fontana). Born Nov. 30, 1912, in Buenos Aires. Argentine film director and actor.

Del Carril began his motion picture career as an actor in 1937. Since 1948 he has been a director. His films include Bloody Furrows (1949), Troubled Waters Flow (1952, based on a novel by A. Varela), White Lands (1959), and This Land Is Mine (1960). As a counterbalance to the commercial films that are Argentina’s staple cinematic output, Del Carril makes motion pictures in which he touches on important social problems and truthfully reveals the hard life of the toiling poor and their exploitation.
