Dorodnitsyn, Anatolii Alekseevich

Born Nov. 19 (Dec. 2), 1910, in the village of Bashino, Tula Province. Soviet mathematician, geophysicist, specialist in mechanics. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953) and Hero of Socialist Labor (1970).

Dorodnitsyn graduated from the Groznyi Petroleum Institute in 1931, He worked at the Central Aerohydrodynamics Institute from 1941 to 1955 and at the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1945 to 1955. In 1955 he became director of the Computer Center of the Academy of Sciences. He has been a professor at the Moscow Physicotechnical Institute since 1947.

Dorodnitsyn’s principal works are devoted to problems in dynamic meteorology, aerodynamics, and applied mathematics. He has studied the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of several classes of nonlinear differential equations. He developed a vortex theory of wings of complex forms and proposed methods of computing axisymmetric supersonic gas flows. He derived a numerical method of integral relations for the solutions of partial differential equations as well as methods for the numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. Dorodnitsyn theoretically described air flows over mountain ranges. He constructed a theory of the boundary layer in a compressible gas. A recipient of the State Prize of the USSR (1946, 1947, and 1951), he has been awarded three Orders of Lenin, three other orders, and various medals.
