Codman, Ogden Codman, Ogden(1863–1951) interior designer; born in Boston, Mass. Following a youth in France and architecture studies, he opened an office in Boston (1891) and one in Newport (1893), where Edith Wharton hired him to decorate her house. Together they wrote the influential Decoration of Houses (1897), which promoted simplicity and suitability. His work on other Newport mansions was characterized by 18th-century French good taste. |
