a people living in the Central African Republic (in the region of the Ubangi and Chari interfluve), in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (in the interior regions of the bend of the Ubangi River), and in Cameroon. Their entire population is about 1 million (1967 estimate). The Banda language is in the Central Sudan language group. The majority of the Banda retain their traditional local beliefs; a small number are Christians. Their chief occupations are agriculture (corn, cassava, and taro), and animal husbandry.

an interinsular sea in the Pacific Ocean, between Seram, Selatan Timur, Wetar, and other islands. Area 695,000 sq km. The average depth is 3,064 m and the greatest depth, 7,440 m. The sea currents during February are directed toward the southeast and east; in August, toward the west and northwest. The average annual water temperature is 27° C; the average salinity is 33.0–34.5 parts per thousand. Tides are mixed, attaining 2.4 m in height. Flying fish, shark, tuna, octopus, and other animals live in the Banda Sea. There is a port (the city of Ambon) on the island of Seram.
