It differentiates between fixed and moving targets by detecting and measuring the apparent change in frequency of the reflected wave caused by the motion of the target or the observer. It can also serve as an airborne navigational aid by giving ground speed and drift. In this mode, it uses an aircraft compass system as its directional reference.
