Butler, David C.

(1829–91) governor; born near Bloomington, Ind. A Nebraska cattle trader, he served in the territorial legislature in the 1860's. As Nebraska's first governor (Rep., 1867–71), he developed the railroads and built state office buildings in Lincoln, the new capital. Impeached for appropriating state money for his own use, he returned to stock raising in Pawnee City.
