Apatity

a city in Murmansk Oblast, RSFSR, located between Lake Imandra and the Khibiny mountains, with a railroad station 23 km west of Kirovsk. In 1968 it had a population of 40,700. Apatity has an apatite-nepheline concentrating mill, the Kirov State Regional Electric Power Plant, a prefabricated reinforced concrete plant, and various construction organizations. The Kola branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR is located in Apatity. The economy is augmented by dairy farming and the growing of potatoes and green vegetables. The settlement of Apatity was founded in 1935 when the apatite-nepheline mines were opened. It was reorganized into a city in 1966.
