sweet but somewhat dry fruit of the evergreen tree Chrysobalanus icaco, of the family Chyrsobalanaceae. The fruits are eaten fresh and often made into preserves. An oil used for making candles is also extracted from the seeds, particularly in West Africa. The tree may also be planted as an ornamental. Coca-plum is classified in the division MagnoliophytaMagnoliophyta, division of the plant kingdom consisting of those organisms commonly called the flowering plants, or angiosperms. The angiosperms have leaves, stems, and roots, and vascular, or conducting, tissue (xylem and phloem).
