Busra

(in antiquity, Bostra), a city in southern Syria. In ancient times Busra was a city of the Nabataean Kingdom; in A.D. 106 it became the chief center of the Roman province of Arabia. In the seventh century it was conquered by the Arabs. Monuments from Roman times have been partially preserved, such as colonnades of the central street, a triple-span arch, thermae, ruins of palaces, a hippodrome, and a theater (the best of the ancient theaters in Syria). Busra also has the remains of a Christian cathedral (A.D. 513), which is one of the first examples of circular construction with a cupola. A citadel, several mosques, and the most ancient madrasah in Syria date back to the 11th or 12th century.
