Busken Huet, Conrad

Born Dec. 28, 1826, in The Hague; died May 1, 1886, in Paris. Dutch author, litterateur, and critic.

Busken Huet was a pastor at first, but he renounced his spiritual calling. From 1862 to 1865 he joined E. Potgieter in editing the journal De Gids. His monograph The Country of Rembrandt (parts 1-2, 1882-84) is devoted to Dutch culture of the 13th century to the 17th. His works, which express views close to those of Multatuli, laid the foundations of Dutch literary criticism and journalism. He is the author of the naturalist novel Lideweide (1868) and works on Pushkin, Turgenev, and Tolstoy.
