CES1

CES1

A gene on chromosome 16q22.2 that encodes a member of the carboxylesterase family, which hydrolyse or transesterify xenobiotics (e.g., cocaine and heroin) and endogenous substrates with ester,
thioester or amide bonds. CES1 may participate in fatty acyl and cholesterol ester metabolism, and may play a role in maintaining the blood-brain barrier. It is the major liver enzyme and functions in liver drug clearance.
