agitator[′aj·ə‚tād·ər] (mechanical engineering) A device for keeping liquids and solids in liquids in motion by mixing, stirring, or shaking. Agitator the twice-monthly magazine of the Central Committee of the CPSU, with a circulation of more than 1 million in 1969. Founded in 1923, it was originally the organ of the Central Committee of the Russian Communist Party (Bolshevik), the Moscow Committee of the RCP (Bolshevik), and the Chief Political Educational Committee and was called Pamiatka agitatora (Agitator’s Memorandum). In 1925 it became Sputnik agitatora (Agitator’s Companion). From 1925 to 1936 it came out in two editions, an urban and a rural one. In 1956 the Central Committee of the CPSU saw the need to raise Agitator’s circulation to 300,000. The magazine treats questions of internal and external policies of the CPSU and the Soviet government, summarizes the results of mass political work, and publishes information about the political, economic, and cultural life of the country and its international situation. It prints materials to aid ideological cadres and Party departments, popularizes advanced methods of labor in industry and agriculture, and gives advice and answers to readers’ questions.
