Syncope triggered by swallowing. It is an abnormal reflex in which stimulation of the esophagus elicits vagal motor impulses that cause bradycardia, peripheral vasodilation, and hypotension. See also: syncope

deglutition syncope

A condition of sympathetic inhibition from vagus nerve activation due to stimulation of the oesophagus in swallowing, especially when cold beverages are taken. In a severe case there may be marked slowing of the heart, widening of peripheral blood vessels and a drop in blood pressure. This may result in dangerous dizziness, confusion and syncope.
