Degler, Carl N. (Neumann)

(1921– ) historian; born in Orange, N.J. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University (1952) and taught at Stanford University (1968). Combining sociological, economic, and cultural analysis with historiography, he received the 1972 Pulitzer Prize for Neither Black nor White: Slavery and Race Relations in Brazil and the United States (1971). His works on women include Women and Economics (1966) and Women and the Family in America from the Revolution to the Present (1980).
