Coblenzian Stage

Coblenzian Stage

a subdivision of the lower series of the Devonian system, which was identified by the Belgian geologist A. Dumont in 1848. At present the term “Siegenian and Emsian stages” is used more often than the term “Coblenzian stage.” Deposits of the Coblenzian stage are represented by two basic types of rock: (1) sandstones and graywackes with Spirifer primaevus Stein., which are typical particularly in the Rhine area (in the region of Koblenz), as well as in the USSR in Kazakhstan and Eastern Siberia, and (2) Hercynian limestones with Spirifer togatus Barr., Karpinskia conjugula Tschern., and so forth, which are widely found in the Urals, Middle Asia, and Siberia (Salair).
