[dē′gau̇s·iŋ ‚kȯil] (electromagnetism) A plastic-encased coil, about 1 foot (0.3 meter) in diameter, that can be plugged into a 120-volt alternating-current wall outlet and moved slowly toward and away from a color television picture tube to demagnetize adjacent parts.
