degauss[dē′gau̇s] (electronics) To remove, erase, or clear information from a magnetic tape, disk, drum, or core. (electromagnetism) To neutralize (demagnetize) a magnetic field of, for example, a ship hull or television tube; a direct current of the correct value is sent through a cable around the ship hull; a current-carrying coil is brought up to and then removed from the television tube. Also known as deperm. degaussTo remove unwanted magnetism from a monitor or the read/write head in a disk or tape drive.
