Size: 341 acres.
Established: Transfer from the War Department authorized on May 29, 1930; effective on August 12, 1940.
Location:On the Maryland shore of the Potomac River, south of Washington, DC. From I-95, the Capital Beltway, follow the signs for MD 210 Indian Head Hwy. Take Exit 3, go south on Indian Head Hwy., and turn right onto Fort Washington Rd.
Facilities:Picnic area, bicycle trail, rest rooms, visitor center, museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities:Hiking, bicycling, fishing, guided tours, living history programs.
Special Features:This fort across the Potomac from Mount Vernon was built to protect Washington, D.C. Construction was begun in 1814 to replace an 1809 fort destroyed during the War of 1812.
