Translations

Defoliation

Defoliation

the preharvest removal of leaves from plants to facilitate the mechanical harvesting of a crop. Defoliation is accomplished through the use of chemical agents (defoliants) that stimulate processes in plants similar to those taking place during the natural aging of leaves. Spraying cotton with defoliants after one to three bolls have opened stimulates the leaves to fall and hastens the ripening of the unopened bolls. The defoliation of ornamental plants, fruit trees, and plants of the genus Eucommia also produces good results.
