Dikson Land

part of the island of Vestspitsbergen (Norway), between the Isfjorden to the south and the Wijde Fjord to the north. Longitudinal ridges of medium-sized mountains with a maximum elevation of 1,128 m are bordered on the west and the east by narrow bands of lowlands. There are corrie, valley, and slope glaciers in the eastern and southern parts. The average January temperature is −16°C, the average July temperature is 7°C, and precipitation totals approximately 200 mm a year. Coal deposits are exploited by Soviet enterprises through a concession on the shore of the Billefjorden. A coal port and the settlement of Piramiden have been built there.
