A trained specialist, who is often employed by local or central government (UK) and acts as adviser, educator, consultant, manager and/or enforcement officer, ensuring that members of the public live, work and play in safe healthy environments. Some EHOs specialise in housing safety, public health, occupational health and safety, food hygiene and standards, environmental protection, waste management and pollution control.
Work activities
Inspect food from source to distribution to ensure compliance with health and safety standards; ensure the health, welfare and general contentedness of food animals; investigate work-related accidents and identify dangerous construction and poor maintenance of industrial sites; assess outbreaks of infections, if appropriate, and hand off investigation to expert microbiologists; sample water for coliforms in public and private water supplies; monitor radon and radioactivity; license pet shops and other animal-related businesses; monitor noise, air, land and water pollution; provide a public face for EHOs; facilitate compliance through education, advice and enforcement; advise on health and safety issues for new construction; ensure removal of rubbish and publicly abandoned vehicles.
