Estados

(Isla de los Estados; also Staten Island), an island in the southwestern part of the Atlantic Ocean, east of Tierra del Fuego, from which it is separated by the Le Maire Strait. Isla de los Estados has an area of about 540 sq km; the maximum elevation is 1,120 m. The island has a temperate marine climate; summers are cool, and annual precipitation totals 600–700 mm. Fogs and strong winds are often encountered. The island has grassy oceanic meadows. Seal hunting is the principal economic activity.
