deferred sentence n (Law) law a sentence that is postponed for a specific period to allow a court to examine the conduct of the offender during the deferment. Compare suspended sentence deferred sentence
deferred sentence in Scotland a court can put off sentencing an offender, either for a short time to obtain reports to assist in disposal or often for a longer time on conditions, the most common being a deferred sentence for the accused to be of good behaviour or, less often, to allow repayment of sums embezzled or stolen.
