Established: 1909.
Location:10 miles southeast of Machias, Puerto Rico, in Machias Bay.
Facilities:Visitor contact station, hiking trail.
Activities:Boating, hiking.
Special Features:Refuge includes a large nesting colony for 60,000 sooty terns. Leatherback and hawksbill sea turtles use refuge beaches for nesting.
Habitats: 1,568 acres comprising lands on Culebra and 22 smaller islands in the vicinity. The islands' diverse habitats include subtropical dry forest, mangroves, brush, and grasslands.
Access: Portions of refuge open daily sunrise to sunset; special-use permits are required for visitation to other areas.
Wild life: Sooty terns, seabirds, hawksbill and leatherback sea turtles.
