On the northwestern border of MS, north of Greenville; organized Feb 9, 1836 from Chickasaw cession of 1836. Name Origin: For Sweet Coahoma, known also as Coahoma Sheriff, daughter of the last Choctaw in the area. The name means 'red panther.'
