Bellotto, Bernardo

(bĕrnär`dō bāl-lôt`tō), 1720–80, Venetian architectural and landscape painter, also called Canaletto, after his uncle and teacher CanalettoCanaletto
, 1697–1768, Venetian painter, whose original name was Antonio Canal. He studied with his father, Bernardo Canal, a theatrical scene painter, and spent several years in Rome.

They usually depict scenes in the cities in which Bellotto resided. In 1747 he was appointed court painter at Dresden and in 1770 painter to Stanislaus II at Warsaw.

Bellotto, Bernardo

Born Jan. 30, 1720, in Venice; died Nov. 17, 1780, in Warsaw. Italian painter and etcher. Nephew and pupil of A. Canaletto, whose nickname he inherited.

From 1747 to 1767, Bellotto worked in Dresden, Vienna, and Munich and from 1767, in Warsaw. A master of the meticulously accurate architectural landscape, he painted views of Venice, Dresden, Warsaw, and other cities in silvery tones with spare strokes.
