(al'ō-sōm), Obsolete term for one of the chromosomes differing in appearance or behavior from the autosomes and sometimes unequally distributed among the germ cells. [allo- + G. sōma, body]

allosome

(1) A foreign constituent of the cytoplasm which has entered from outside the cell; this definition is little used in the working medical parlance.
(2) Heterochromosome; heterotypical chromosome; Sex chromosome—i.e., an X or Y chromosome.
