Enver Alikhanov

Born Apr. 17, 1917, in Baku. Soviet state and party figure; scholar and doctor of geological and minerological sciences; professor. Member of the CPSU since 1943.

Born to the family of a worker, Alikhanov graduated from the Azerbaijan Industrial Institute in 1941. During 1941–42 he served as chief of staff of an artillery battalion in the Crimea and on the Northern Caucasus front. From 1942 to 1945 he worked as senior geologist in the oil fields. From 1945 to 1951 he held responsible party positions in Azerbaijan. Between 1951 and 1959 he held positions of authority in the oil industry of the Azerbaijan SSR, serving as minister of the republic’s petroleum industry during 1958–59. From 1959 to 1961 he was secretary of the Central Committee of the Azerbaijan Communist Party. Alikhanov was awarded the Lenin Prize in 1961 for his part in the mass exploitation of marine petroleum deposits in Azerbaijan. From December 1961 to April 1970 he was chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan SSR. He is presently involved in scientific work. At the Twenty-third Congress of the CPSU, Alikhanov was elected candidate member of the Party’s Central Committee. A deputy of the sixth and seventh convocations of the Supreme Soviet, he has been awarded two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, as well as a number of medals.
