CercopidaeCercopidae[sar′käp·ə‚dē]Cercopidae(also Aphrophoridae), spittle insects, a family of insects of the order Isoptera. There are 3,000 species. The insects are 3–10 mm long. They are usually brown or greenish; there are some mottled individuals. The insects are found on all continents, living on herbaceous and woody plants and feeding on their sap. The adult insects leap and fly well. The larvae, which are relatively immobile, excrete a froth that forms masses in which the young insects live. The species Philaemus spumarius damages the stems and leaves of strawberries, currants, fruit trees, and roses. Cercopidae
