contest and sponsored mobility

contest and sponsored mobility

contrasting modes of SOCIAL MOBILITY via education, identified by R. H. Turner (1960), in which children are either chosen to enter a selective system of secondary education and supported, financially and in other ways, in their passage though this system and ultimately into élite positions: sponsored mobility; or must engage in continuous open competition for educational and social advantage: contest mobility. Thus, while grammar schools are an example of sponsored mobility, COMPREHENSIVE EDUCATION is intended to produce contest mobility and more continuous EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY. In practice, there are likely to be elements of 'S ponsorship’ within any predominantly contest system. See also STREAMING. contextual fallacy see ECOLOGICAL FALLACY OR WRONG-LEVEL FALLACY.
