centrum

the solid, central part of each VERTEBRA that gives strength to the vertebral column. The centrum lies ventral to the spinal cord and derives embryologically from the NOTOCHORD. Each centrum is joined to the centrum of the next vertebra by COLLAGEN fibres but the vertebrae are separated by intervertebral discs that act as shock absorbers and allow flexibility.
