Buphthalmos
Buphthalmos a pathologic enlargement of the eyeball. It is found principally in children with congenital glaucoma as a result of increased intraocular pressure, inasmuch as the eye membranes in a child yield more to distension than those of an adult. Buphthalmos in congenital glaucoma is also called hydrophthalmos (dropsy of the eye). With buphthalmos vision is severely diminished or completely lost. Surgery is the main treatment. M. L.
