contact stomatitis

con·tact sto·ma·ti·tis

(kontakt stōmă-tītis) Delayed hypersensitivity reaction with possible intraoral involvement; reaction to antiseptics, antibiotic lozenges, lipstick, lip balm, and sunscreens may cause the lips to swell, fissure, or roughen. Some dental appliances that contain heavy metals (e.g., cobalt, mercury, nickel, silver) may elicit mucosal reactions. Allergy to the free monomer found in dentures is rare.
