Essential-Oil Plants, Institute of

 

(full name, All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Essential-Oil Crops), an institute of the Ministry of Agriculture of the USSR.

The Institute of Essential-Oil Plants was founded in Simferopol’ in 1965. In 1978 it included the following divisions: breeding and seed-growing, plant protection, biochemistry, oil processing, and economics. There are laboratories of genetics, inorganic nutrients, experimental biology, and herbicides. There is a design office and several experimental stations and farms. The institute does research in breeding, the technology of growing essential oil plants, and processing. Regionalized varieties raised in the institute include the Smena, Luch, and Iantar’ coriander varieties; the Prilukskaia 6 and Krasnodarskaia 2 mint varieties; and the Voznesenskii 24 and Krymskii rannii clary sage varieties. The institute has created approximately 30 new techniques for producing essential oil.

In 1971 a scientific and production association for essential-oil plants and essential oils was formed on the basis of the institute. The institute has a graduate division.
