active muscle relaxation technique

active muscle relaxation technique

A type of bodywork used to relax overly active muscles and manage soft-tissue pain. AMRT requires isometric contractions of either an overactive muscle, or its antagonist(s) against resistance.
Once the patient learns the technique, he or she becomes quasi-independent of the therapist and performs it on his or her own; the method is complementary to, but not a substitute for, passive muscle massage and chiropractic techniques.
