Dome of the Rock n (Named Buildings) the mosque in Jerusalem, Israel, built in 691 ad by caliph `Abd al-Malik: the third most holy place of Islam; stands on the Temple Mount alongside the al-Aqsa mosque. Also called (not in Muslim usage): Mosque of Omar Dome′ of the Rock′ n. a shrine in Jerusalem at the site from which Muhammad ascended through the seven heavens to the throne of God: built on the site of the Jewish Temple.
