clubbing of fingers

The expansion—broadening and/or thickening—fingertips or toes, with semi-spherical swelling of the nail and a decrease in the angle between the cuticle and the nail, often accompanied by underlying hypertrophic osteitis associated with chronic ‘central’—pulmonary—hypoxia, decreased blood O2 due to infection, emphysema, congenital heart disease—tetralogy of Fallot—transposition of great vessels, cystic fibrosis, bronchogenic carcinoma, tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, pneumoconiosis, interstitial pulmonary fibrosis
DiffDx Nonpulmonary disease—e.g., atrial myxomas, Hodgkin’s disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, hepatitis, cirrhosis, thyroid acropachy, Graves’ disease
