deep inelastic collision deep inelastic collision[′dēp ‚in·ə′las·tik kə′lizh·ən] (nuclear physics) A nuclear reaction in which two nuclei interact strongly, dissipating sizable amounts of energy and exchanging energy and nucleons, while their surfaces overlap for a brief period corresponding to a partial rotation of the intermediate dinuclear complex. Also known as deep inelastic transfer; incomplete fusion; quasi-fission; relaxed peak process; strongly damped collision. |
