Evgenii Mishustin

Mishustin, Evgenii Nikolaevich

 

Born Feb. 9 (22), 1901, in Moscow. Soviet microbiologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953); Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1961).

In 1924, Mishustin graduated from the K. A. Timiriazev Moscow Agricultural Academy. From 1924 to 1931 he worked in institutes of the Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences. In 1939 he was appointed head of the department of soil microbiology at the Institute of Microbiology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Mishustin has been teaching in Moscow institutions of higher education since 1930 (professor, since 1937). In 1961 he was appointed head of the subdepartment of microbiology at the K. A. Timiriazev Moscow Agricultural Academy.

Mishustin’s principal works are on soil microbiology and the biological fixation of atmospheric nitrogen. He studied the zonal distribution of microorganisms in soils that are characteristic of various geographic zones of the USSR. A recipient of the State Prize of the USSR in 1951 and 1970, he has also been awarded two Orders of Lenin, an Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
