Atasu

an urban-type settlement, the administrative center of Zhanaarka Raion, Karaganda Oblast, Kazakh SSR, on the Sarysu River, with a railroad station (Zhanaarka) on the Zharyk-Dzhezkazgan line. Population, 16,400 (1968). Iron ore is mined for the Karaganda metallurgical plants. There is a people’s theater.
