de-differentiation

de-differentiation

  1. any process in which previously more complex and variegated social arrangements are replaced by less complex patterns, e.g. the reduction of political pluralism under TOTALITARIANISM.
  2. (a specifically postmodernist concept referring to) ‘the collapse of the Modernist order of things’. Modernity is seen as dividing the social and natural world into pure, harmonized categories, defined and governed by reason. So private life was divided from public life, youth from old age, work from leisure, etc. Postmodernists believe that this Modernist order was always a myth and that this myth has now disintegrated. De-differentiation points to the unsustainability of rational order. It emphasizes the messiness, contrariness, ambiguity and incoherence of social life.
