It is a center for the manufacture of table linen and terylene, a synthetic fabric, and has silk mills, collieries, and engineering works. The naval base of Rosyth became part of the city in 1911. Dunfermline abbey, founded by Malcolm III of Scotland in the 11th cent., holds his remains and those of his wife, St. Margaret, and of Robert I.
