AsilidaeAsilidae[ə′sil·ə‚dē]Asilidae(robber-flies), a family of insects of the order Diptera. The eyes are large, the proboscis is pointed, and the abdomen is long. Of the more than 4,700 known species, representatives of approximately 100 genera are found in the USSR, primarily in the steppes and deserts. The larvae live in the ground or in decaying wood, feeding on the larvae of other insects or on vegetation. The adults are predacious; they maintain the balance of nature by feeding on insects.
