Location:Adjoins the town of Fort Atkinson, off IA 24.
Activities:An annual rendezvous recreates life on the 1840s Iowa frontier with authentic buckskinners, US Army dragoons, black powder shoots, crafts people, contests, and demonstrations.
Special Features:The original Fort Atkinson (1840-1849) was built to keep the Winnebagoon neutralground after their removal from Wisconsin in 1840 and to provideprotection for them from other native tribes. When the Winnebago wereremoved from Iowa there was no longer a reason for the fort and itceased to exist. The fort was reconstructed and dedicated in 1968 aspart of the State Preserve System because of its geological,archeological, and historical value.
