Nykøbing is the chief city. The island's southern tip, Gedser Odde, is the southernmost point in Denmark. Falster has much fertile soil; sugar beets, fruit, and grain are the main crops. The island's east coast is a summer resort area.Falstera Danish island in the western Baltic Sea, in the southeastern Danish Archipelago. Population, 46,500 (1966). Falster has an area of 514 sq km; elevations range from below sea level to 44 m. The surface of the island is a hilly morainic plain with meadows and small broad-leaved forests. Falster is joined by bridges to the nearby islands of Sjaelland and Lolland; the bridge to Sjaelland is 3.2 km long. Sugar beets and grains are grown, and dairy cattle are raised on the island.
