Location:Northeastern Illinois, in LaSalle County, about 3 miles west of Ottawa on the bluffs of the Illinois River.
Facilities:Primitive camping areas (no restrooms or drinking water), picnic areas,2 shelters with restrooms and drinking water near each, playground,baseball diamond, nature trails, 2 observation decks.
Activities:Camping, picnicking, hiking, wildlife viewing.
Special Features:Park includes five contemporary earthen sculptures on the site of a former surface coal mine. Titled "Effigy Tumuli" in tribute to the Native American burial grounds that inspired it, this unique "earth art" is one of the largest earthen sculptures ever built and the largest since Mount Rushmore. The five sculptures--a snake, a turtle, a catfish, a frog, and an insect called a water strider--represent animals native to the Illinois River region.
