Barron, William Wallace

(1911– ) governor; born in Elkins, W.Va. A lawyer and army veteran of World War II, he served in the West Virginia house of delegates, becoming attorney general (1957–61). As Democratic governor of West Virginia (1961–65), he became known for tightening controls over strip mining. He later opened a Charleston, W.Va., law firm, Barron and Davis.
