Cells are spheric and reproduce by budding; a prominent feature is a polysaccharide capsule. Cryptococcus neoformans var. neoformans has a worldwide distribution and can often be isolated from weathered pigeon droppings. Cryptococcus neoformans var. gattii causes cryptococcosis in subtropical and tropical climates.
