The female analogue of the penis. The principle erectile sexual organ in women and the main erogenic centre. It lies under the pubic bone at the front junction of the inner lips (labia minora) and immediately in front of the urethra, to which it is closely applied. The clitoris has a substantial nerve and blood supply. From the Greek kleitoris , little hill.

clitoris

a small, rounded projection on the anterior side of the VULVA in female mammals which is homologous with the PENIS in the male but is smaller and has no urethra. It has an exposed glans of erectile tissue that is richly innervated with sensory endings. During sexual excitement parasympathetic nerve impulses trigger dilation of the arteries serving the clitoris and the increased blood-flow causes swelling. The position of the clitoris usually causes it to be stimulated during sexual intercourse; in humans, if stimulation is sufficiently intense and lengthy, an orgasm will result.
